The Columbus Renaissance Desktop Globe 12 Inch matches the antique flavor of the map with the contemporary geography, making this model irresistible. The classic sensibility of the globe's design is enhanced by the parchment-colored oceans and antique hues of the political map. Small drawings of ships and mythic sea creatures abound on the map, along with elegant compass roses and a cartouche. The 12 inch acrylic sphere is framed at a 23.5 degree tilt by the hard plastic half-meridian and metal base, reaching 14 inches tall combined. The base is colored gold, complementing the stylish design of the world globe.

It amazes me that in this modern high tech era in which we live that a company such as Columbus Globes is incapable of lining up a line. Clearly Columbus does not take pride in workmanship and their quality control is seriously lacking. Can
you imagine spending big $$$ on high end Columbus globes only to find this sloppy craftsmanship. Would you have any pride of ownership with the top half of your globe misaligned from the bottom half? Visualize how funky the countries look out of alignment.
As to the rest of the globe the meridian is of a plastic that appears to be sturdy but should be metal even on this lower end model. The base is metal but is hollow on the inside with no padding so it will scratch your surface. The cartography is acceptable considering the price point of this model. It looks ok lit or unlit. The unit comes fully assembled with included light.
Columbus Globes appears incapable of making a globe where the longitude lines match up. I guess this is what you can expected from German "craftsmanship". Meridian is made out of plastic, should be metal. Base is metal but has no padding. It will scratch your surface. If your not to picky about distorted looking countries because Columbus craftsmen can't line up lines then this may be for you. Its unfortunate as the map itself is of decent quality and clarity.
